March 31st - April 4th

Superkids: This week we will continue with r-controlled vowels (ir and ur).  The spelling words are: bird, third, burn, turn, cold, know, does, laugh, both, again.  In writing the students will continue with their narrative stories.  They will work on developing a problem and solution.  
 
Math: We will continue working on subtraction.  If the lessons and review go well, we will have a quiz on Friday.  If more time is needed for mastery, we will move the test to next week.  
 
Religion: We will continue working on our forgiveness chapter.  As we did not get to the test last week, we will do so this week.  A chapter review will go home to practice.
 
Social Studies: We will learn more about maps and geography.  We will learn how geography affects the way people live. 
 
Science: We will continue with fun Mystery Science lessons focusing on Spring.

March 17th - March 21st

Superkids: This week the students will learn words with r-controlled vowels (ar and or).  The spelling words are: car, far, star, card, hard, born, corn, horn, short, sport.  In writing, the students will begin to plan fiction stories.  
 
Math: This week the students will learn to subtract 10's.  They will use strategies we learned last week such as base 10 blocks, number lines, and hundred charts.
 
Religion: This week we will focus on forgiveness.  The students will participate in lessons from Chapter 11 with a quiz on Friday.  
 
Science: Last week we learned about stars and why they appear in the sky at night.  We will review our lesson on Monday and have a short practice quiz.  This will come home as a study guide.  We will take our actual quiz on Tuesday.
 
Social Studies: We will continue in our new unit - Geography.  Last week we began by learning about maps.  We will continue those lessons this week.

March 10th - March 14th

Superkids: This week we will be focusing on the -aw sound at the end of words and in the middle of words.  The spelling list is: law, saw, dawn, lawn, crawl, come, coming, they, our, put.  In writing the 1st graders have been working on descriptive sentences.  They will take that sentence practice and begin to write descriptive paragraphs.
 
Math: We will wrap up chapter 10 this week.  We will likely have our quiz on Thursday.  
 
Religion: We have been learning about Lent.  We will review what we have learned and take a short quiz.  We also have our Chapter quiz on Monday.  Study guides went home last week.  
 
Social Studies: We have a quiz on our last Economics lesson on Monday.  Study guides went home last week.  We will spend the week reviewing the whole unit and will take a test either at the end of this week or the beginning of next depending on how our review goes.  A study guide will go home on Monday or Tuesday.
 
Science: We will do our next lesson - Why do the stars come out at night?

March 3rd - March 7th

Superkids: This week the students will be practicing words with the -all ending/pattern.  The spelling words are: call, mall, small, stall, wall, baseball, basketball, hallway, fallen, taller.  In writing the students will learn how to write descriptive sentences.
 
Math: We will continue working on Chapter 10.  The students are learning to add two-digit numbers using base 10 blocks.  They will use number lines, hundreds charts, and make models with blocks.
 
Religion: This week we will begin learning about Lent.  We will do many activities to help us prepare for our Lenten journey.
 
Science: We will continue with our moon and star lessons while also incorporating fun Mystery Science lessons.  
 
Social Studies: We will begin our next lesson, Lesson 9 - What Do Good Neighbors Do?  We will learn how neighbors help each other and take care of the neighborhood.

February 24th - February 28th

Superkids: This week we will practice long vowel "tricker" words and memory words.  The words are: paper, even, silent, open, super, their, now, always, because, been.  In writing, we will learn to use text evidence to answer questions about a story.
 
Math: We will wrap up Chapter 9 and have a quiz on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how our review goes.  The students should understand greater than and less than by 1's and 10's.  They should also understand how to use the < > = symbols.
 
Science: We will begin our fourth unit - Moon and Stars.  Our first lesson is called, "When can you see the full moon?"  The students will explore different shapes of the moon that can appear on different nights.  They will use the observations to discover patterns in how the moons shape changes and predict when the next full moon will appear.
 
Social Studies: We will finish our last topic in lesson 8 - Family members spend time together.  We will do comprehension activities and will likely have a quiz next week.  A study guide will go home in advance.
 
Religion: We will finish our lessons with Blaise in Growing with God.  

February 17th - February 21st

Superkids: This week we will learn more about contractions.  We will focus on contractions with is, are, and will. Our spelling words are: I'm, he's, she's, it's, we're, you're, I'll, he'll, she'll, you'll.  We will finish our How-To writing this week as well.
 
Math: This week we will continue our work in Chapter 9.  We will begin to practice comparing numbers using the greater than and less than symbols ( < and > ).  We will have our quiz next week.
 
Religion: Growing with God has been a great addition to our religion class.  We will continue to learn from Blaise and participate in group discussions.  
 
Science: We will explore Mystery Science and will engage in some fun science lessons.  We only have two first-grade units left and will soon begin Night Patterns - Moon and Stars.
 
Social Studies: This week we will talk about President's Day.  We will focus on Lincoln and Washington.  We will also continue with Economics - Lesson 8 - How do family members care for each other?

February 10th - February 14th

Superkids: This week we will begin Unit 10 Week 2.  We will continue to work with long vowel y endings (ay).  The students will also learn how to add -er and -est to the end of words.  The spelling words are: say, may, play, happier, happiest, down, too, work, many, first.  In writing the students will be introduced to How-To writing.
 
Math: The students will begin Chapter 9 which focuses on more and less.  The students will learn to identify numbers 10 more and 10 less, 1 more and 1 less.
 
Religion: This week we will take a quiz on Chapter 8.  We will then review all of Unit 2 and prepare for a test.  A study guide will be sent home.  We will also continue Growing with God.
 
Science: This week we will continue to review for and have our Sun and Shadows test.  The students should understand how a shadow is formed and why it moves.
 
Social Studies: We will continue in our Economics Unit.

January 3rd - January 7th

Superkids: This week we begin Unit 10.  This unit focuses on the letter y and the sounds it can make at the end of a word.  In writing the students will finish their Narrative stories and begin Expository stories.
The spelling words are: by, fly, cry, try, belly, jelly, smelly, bunny, funny, sunny.  Due to the shortened week, the spelling quiz will be on Thursday. 
 
Math: We will finish up chapter 8 and will have a quiz on Thursday.  The students are doing great work counting by and recognizing 10's and 1's in place value form.
 
Science: We will review what we have learned in our Sun and Shadow unit.  
 
Social Studies: The students came home with a study guide for our next quiz.  We will review again on Monday and will take the quiz on Tuesday.  Please review needs and wants, goods and services, and price with your kiddos! Thank you :)
 
Religion - This month we will begin Growing with God.  Mrs. Keller sent information in the all-school newsletter.  Please reach out if you have any questions!

January 27th - January 31st

Superkids: This week we will continue with contractions and learn to spell our memory words.  The spelling words are: can't, won't, don't, boy, girl, two, four, about, over, before.  In writing the students will begin drafting a narrative story.
 
Math: This week in math we will begin Chapter 8 - Make numbers 11-19. We will have a quiz next week.
On Friday the students brought home their old math book.  We will begin working on our new book on Monday.  
 
Religion - We will continue Chapter 8 and learn more about the Lord's Prayer.  We will have a quiz at the end of the week.
 
Science - We will review all of the material we have learned in our Sun and Shadows unit.  We will prepare for a cumulative test.
 
Social Studies - We will continue with our economics unit.  The students will play a market game that familiarizes them with goods and services, needs and wants.

January 20th - January 24th

Superkids: This week we will begin the 2nd half of Superkids.  On Friday your child brought home their Superkids workbook.  It would be a wonderful idea to keep this book and practice past spelling words and spelling patterns.  The students will continue to see the words/patterns in our reading and activities.  Our spelling words this week are contractions.  The words are: isn't, didn't, hasn't, hadn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, couldn't wouldn't.
 
Math: This week we will review what we have learned in chapter 7.  We will practice skip counting, using a 100 chart, and making groups.  We will have a quiz on Thursday.
 
Religion: We will prepare for Catholic Schools Week.  
 
Science: We will complete our last activity about light and shadows.  We will review what we have learned and prepare for a unit test.
 
Social Studies: We will continue in our Economics unit with our next chapter: How do family members care for each other?

January 13th - January 17th

Superkids: This week we will continue with long vowel patterns.  Our spelling words are: blue, tie, heat, keep, would, could, some, one, new, were.  In writing, we will use the opinion writing skills that we learned last week and apply them towards a friendly debate.
 
Math: The kiddos will wrap up chapter 7.  They are all doing an excellent job reading and writing numbers in the hundreds!  Skip counting by 2's and 5's can be tricky.  Any additional practice at home would be great!
 
Religion: We will review what we learned in chapter 7.  The students will bring home a study guide on Monday and we will take the quiz on Wednesday.  
 
Science:  We will continue to work on our sun and shadows lessons.  We will also explore some cold weather lessons.
 
Social Studies: We are still working on our Economics unit.  The students will talk about needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. 

January 6th - January 10th

Superkids: This week the students will begin learning long vowel teams.  The spelling words are: mail, nail, tail, rain, train, boat, coat, float, load, road.  In writing the students will begin opinion writing.
**At the end of the week, the students will take a Superkids Midyear assessment.  This assessment reviews spelling patterns, writing techniques, and comprehension that we have been working on since the beginning of the year.  I will be sending home a decoding page from the assessment for your kiddo to practice.  They should practice reading all of the words.  When I give the assessment they will have to correctly choose the word I'm asking them for.  We will take our time and work on this over a few days if needed.
 
Math: We will begin Chapter 7 - Extend the Counting Sequence.  The students will learn patterns and skip counting to count up to 120 using number lines and number charts.
 
Religion: We will begin working on Chapter 7 - God Made Us to be Good and Holy.  
 
Science: We will continue working with light and shadows. We will begin with a fun lesson called, What does your shadow do when you're not looking?
 
Social Studies: We will begin with a few fun New Year's activities.  We will talk about resolutions and create an activity for the hallway.  We will then continue with our lesson - What do families need and want?

December 16th - December 20th

Superkids: This week we will continue to work with our long vowel patterns.  This week we will add -ed and -ing endings to long vowel words. Our spelling words are: baking, baked, smiling, smiled, oh, any, day, good, very, want.
 
Math: This week we will wrap up Chapter 6 - Collecting Data.  We will have a quiz on either Wednesday or Thursday depending on how our practice goes.
 
Religion: We will continue learning about Christmas.  We are also leading mass on Friday.  Please keep practicing with your child at home!  We will practice in class as well.
 
Social Studies: We will continue with our Economics unit.  We will also continue to learn about how Christmas is celebrated around the world.
 
Science: We will have fun with more winter lessons!

December 9th - December 13th

Superkids: This week we will again practice long vowels, but this time we will be adding an s to the end of the word.  The spelling words are: bakes, makes, takes, cakes, snakes, bikes, likes, hikes, hopes, ropes.  
 
Math: This week we will begin Chapter 6 - Represent and Interpret Data.  The students will work with graphs, tally marks, rows and columns.  We will not have a quiz this week.  We will have the quiz next week.  
 
Religion: We will learn continue learning about Advent and will have a short quiz.  We will then begin learning about Christmas. 
 
Science: We have moved on to our third unit, Sun and Shadows.  We will continue to learn about shadows.  We will also do a few fun winter lessons.
 
Social Studies: We are working in our Economics unit now.  We will continue learning about who works in our school and our next lesson is, What do Families Need and Want?

December 2nd - December 6th

Superkids: This week we will stay with our long vowel patterns, but the magic e will be added.  The spelling words are: game, same, ride, side, said, only, you, out, of, here.  
 
Math: We will continue with our addition and subtraction chapter.  The students are learning true equations, reviewing turn around facts, and finding a missing addend.
 
Religion:  This week we will begin learning about Advent.  We will do many projects within the classroom and as a part of the whole school.  The students will also participate in all school Advent prayer services.
 
Social Studies: The students will begin the Economics Unit.  Our first lesson will be, "Who Works At Your School? and our vocabulary words are: income, job, service, and skills. 
 
Science: We will begin our Sun and Shadows Unit.  Our first lesson will be Sun, Shadows, and Daily Patterns - Could a statue's shadow move?
